Breastfeeding my twins has been one of the hardest and most rewarding task I have ever had the pleasure of doing. When I found out I was pregnant with twins, my constant question was, How do you feed 2 babies at the same time? I didn’t immediately know that I wanted to exclusively breastfeed them. 16yrs ago I breastfed my daughter and after 3months I thought she decided it was enough, and boy was I happy! I didn’t know that she was just adjusting to her surroundings I took her constant unlatching as
a sign that it was over.
So when I decided that breastfeeding was going to be my choice. I went to all the free breastfeeding classes I could find. I joined all of the Facebook groups and read all the blogs. However, I still couldn’t wrap my mind around feeding two babies at the same time. Until I went to a breastfeeding class for multiples. There I gained the knowledge and reassurance that I can do this. I didn’t have a big team of supporters. I was told by family and friends that I wouldn’t make enough milk for 2 babies. I was told it
would be too hard.
I was told that formula was better. I was even told that breastfeeding was for white women only. Then they were here. My twins were full term with no NICU. They latched perfectly. They both even did the breast crawl. It was amazing. Then the 4th trimester happened. My nipples were sore,
cracked, and bleeding. At times it was awful to nurse them. I tried pumping and that hurt like hell. I kept telling myself, “I can do anything I put my mind too”. I set daily goals and crushed them. I was pushing myself with pure determination. I know it was crazy but, I had to prove to myself and everyone who said I couldn’t do it. My breastfeeding experience improved everyday.
Not only was I breastfeeding. I was breastfeeding 2 babies and they were hitting all of their growth milestones and I was feeding them at the same time! We’re 8 months in and this is one of the best and most rewarding experiences.
