In celebrating Black History Month, ROSE is encouraging you to reflect on the history of breastfeeding within your family.
During Black History Month, people from across our nation take the time to reflect on influential historical figures. We talk to the little ones about people like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Sojourner Truth. Great praise and appreciation are given to the people that went above and beyond to break down barriers and push for equality. Each of these men and women deserve the accolades and remembrance.
However, how often do we recognize the traditions and history within our own families? How often do we sit down with our own mother, grandmother, or aunts to talk about their journey through motherhood? Well ROSE would like to encourage more African American women tell their story about the history of breastfeeding in their own family. Currently ROSE is accepting post for our
Black History Month initiative, “BlkBFing: Making HERstory”, a blog carnival focusing on breastfeeding and African American mothers in honor of Black History Month. In conjunction with the blog carnival, we would also like collect videos from those willing to share their discussions.
There is a wonderful YouTube video put together by Women's e-News titled, "
Black Women Breastfeeding: A Multi-generational Story", where a
mother and daughter talk about the breastfeeding experience in their family. This video serves as a great example of the type of discussion you can with another woman in your family from another generation.
